GOVERNOR APPOINTS TWO TO TENTH JUDICIAL DISTRICT

(Anoka, MN) Governor Jesse Ventura today announced the appointment of Krista Martin and Jenny Walker to the Tenth Judicial District trial court bench.  Forty-one people applied for these vacancies.

Martin is a solo practitioner and a part-time assistant Tenth Judicial District public defender in Pine City, positions she has held since 1997.  She was an attorney with the law firm of Bina, Holm and Martin in Pine City from 1995 to 1997, a staff attorney and managing attorney with Legal Aid Service of Northeastern Minnesota in Duluth from 1991 to 1995 and an associate attorney with the law firm of Hanft, Fride, et al in Duluth from 1990 to 1991.  Martin earned her juris doctorate degree cum laude from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1990 and her bachelor of arts degree magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, in 1987.

"Krista demonstrated a passion for Pine County.  I know she will use this passion to help ensure adequate court facilities are constructed to better serve the citizens of Pine County," Governor Ventura said.  "In addition, her work in family and juvenile law will serve her well in a court that sees a high percentage of these types of cases."

Martin is vice chair of the Board of Directors for Legal Aid Service of Northeast Minnesota, active in the Volunteer Attorney Program in Pine and Kanabec Counties, is on the leadership committee and a speaker for Parents Forever, and has served on the Pine County Probation Advisory Committee and the Mille Lacs Band Circle Sentencing committee.

Martin fills the vacancy created by the Honorable Linn Slattengren, who retired on July 15, 2001.  The Supreme Court transferred the chambers of this judgeship to Pine County.  Martin, 37, was born in Peru, Indiana and currently lives in Hinckley with her son, Adam, 6.

Walker is an attorney and partner in the Anoka law firm of Jasper and Walker and a part-time assistant Tenth Judicial District public defender in Anoka, positions she has held since 1999.  She was the Chief Tenth District Public Defender in Anoka from 1992 to 1999, a shareholder and associate attorney with the law firm of Nicol and Greenley in Anoka from 1990 to 1994 and an associate attorney with the law firm of Barna, Guzy, Merrill, Hynes and Giancola (now known as Barna, Guzy and Steffen) in Coon Rapids from 1987 to 1990.  Walker earned her juris doctorate degree from Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul in 1987 and her bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin- LaCrosse in 1984.

"It should not surprise anyone who knows Jenny that one day she would become a judge," Governor Ventura said.  "She has as deep a commitment to public service as anyone I know.  As Chief Public Defender, Jenny has also proven that she can be a leader.  She will be an excellent judge."

Walker is a past president of the Anoka County Bar Association, is active in the Minnesota State Bar Association, the Minnesota Public Defenders Association, Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and Minnesota Women Lawyers.  She currently serves on the Minnesota Judges Criminal Benchbook Committee, Anoka County Courthouse Security Committee, State Board of Public Defense Grant Committee, the Anoka County Community Corrections Advisory Board and the Tenth Judicial District Racial Bias Elimination Task Force, and has served on the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission, Commission on Judicial Selection, Governor Carlson's Task Force on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and on a Citizens' Nominating Committee, appointed by Governor Ventura, to recommend candidates for state boards and commissions.

Walker fills the vacancy created by the retirement of the Honorable Spencer Sokolowski, who retired on August 31, 2001.  The Supreme Court continued the chambers of this judgeship for Anoka County.  Walker, 39, was born in Waupaca, Wisconsin, and lives in Andover with her husband, Jonathan Jasper, and their two children, Courtney, 5, and Casey Jo, 3.
