GOVERNOR APPOINTS WALTERS TO THIRD DISTRICT BENCH
(St. Paul, MN) Governor Jesse Ventura today announced the appointment of Terrence Walters to a Third Judicial District trial court bench vacancy in Wabasha County. The opening occurred with the retirement of the Honorable Gerard Ring on December 31, 2002. Eighteen people applied for this vacancy.
Walters is a partner in the Rochester law firm of Walters and Wintering. He has been with the firm since 1989. He was also a partner in the Rochester law firms Walters and McCaleb from l985 to 1989 and Dingle, Suk, Wendland and Walters from 1979 to 1985 and was an assistant Rochester city attorney from 1976 to 1979. Walters earned his juris doctorate degree from William Mitchell College of Law in Saint Paul in 1976 and his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Minnesota in 1972.
"Very few people can match the number of cases that Terry has tried during his 25 year career," Governor Ventura said. "And as a public defender, he has to take the cases that are assigned to him. Having handled some of the most emotionally-charged cases a lawyer could ever see, I know he will treat everyone who appears before him fairly and with respect."
Walters is a member of the Dodge-Fillmore-Olmsted Community Corrections Board, the Olmsted County Domestic Abuse Task Force, is past president of the Olmsted County Bar Association, has served on the Minnesota Supreme Court Criminal Courts Study Commission, the Judicial Evaluation Committee, the Citizens Council on Crime and Justice - Board Study on Mental Illness Defenses and the Olmsted County Offender Services Commission. He is also active in Habitat for Humanity and has served on the Rochester Human Rights Commission, the Legal Assistance of Olmsted County Board of Directors and was a youth baseball coach.
Walters, 53, was born in Rochester where he lives with his wife, Terry Wintering, and their two children, Michael, 18, and Martha, 15.
