The Public Land Survey records consist of the original field notes and plat maps of the survey that was conducted in the state in the mid-1800s. The land grant records include documents related to the acquisition of the lands from the federal government as well as documents concerning the subsequent disposition of those lands by the state. The most commonly consulted of these records are the land sales documents which are used in perfecting abstracts of title for individual properties."

    An independent state agency, "WERC Commissioners and staff travel the State conducting hearings and issuing labor relations decisions in administrative law and contract grievance disputes; mediating contract negotiation and grievance disputes; conducting secret-ballot employe votes; and providing labor management cooperation training and facilitation. [A]lso provides labor and management with lists of qualified ad hoc neutrals not employed by WERC, for a variety of statutory and contractual dispute resolution procedures. [Also] responsible for hearing and deciding appeals relating to certain State Civil Service personnel actions, in cases ... sometimes referred to as 'personnel appeals.'"
